Future Soldiers Push Their Limits at Fort Buchanan Elite Endurance Challenge
FORT BUCHANAN, Puerto Rico — Future Soldiers from the Army's San Juan Company joined recruiters and senior leaders for the Elite Endurance Challenge at Fort Buchanan's Command Sgt. Maj. Wilfredo Vélez Track Oct. 8, testing their physical and mental endurance as they prepare for Basic Combat Training.
Army recruiter Staff Sgt. Julie Perez led the tactical fitness challenge, which featured 400-meter sprints, 90-pound sled drags, burpee broad jumps, 40-meter lunges, 1,500-meter rows and 60-pound farmer's carries.
Command Sgt. Maj. Marcos Vazquez from the Miami Recruiting Battalion, traveled to Puerto Rico to participate alongside the aspiring Soldiers, demonstrating their commitment to leadership through shared challenges.
"The message to the youth of Puerto Rico is simple: the Army is a lifestyle of continuous growth," Perez said. "It is about stepping out of your comfort zone and knowing that your local recruiters and senior leadership will be right there in the trenches sweating and grinding alongside you."
The event reinforced the importance of physical preparation before entering military service. Weekly training sessions help recruits build strength, improve conditioning and prepare for the Army Fitness Test while developing habits that can reduce injuries during their transition to military life.
Beyond fitness, the challenge offered an opportunity for mentorship and personal growth. Working alongside experienced Soldiers allowed participants to build confidence, develop teamwork and gain firsthand insight into Army expectations.
"By hosting these dynamic, community driven fitness challenges, we prove to the youth of Puerto Rico that the Army isn't just a career choice; it's a vibrant, local community where they can thrive, lead, and find a powerful support system," Perez said.
Fort Buchanan provided the military facilities that made the event possible, supporting recruiting efforts and introducing prospective Soldiers to the resources available at the Army's home in the Caribbean.
As a readiness-enabling installation, Fort Buchanan supports military forces in the region, helping prepare service members to accomplish their missions.
For the Future Soldiers who completed the challenge, the experience offered more than a demanding workout. It provided an early introduction to the perseverance, teamwork and leadership that will shape their Army careers.
