U.S. Soldier from Puerto Rico Rises in Army-Wide BOSS Soldier Showdown
Competing under the username “janreal,” Vivas currently ranks among the top three competitors on the Soldier Showdown 8 Fortnite leaderboard. A top-three finish would earn him the opportunity to compete against other leading Army players at the live finals later this year.
The Soldier Showdown, part of the Army’s Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers (BOSS) program, connects Soldiers from different installations and components through competitive gaming. Participants compete in online tournaments and earn points based on their performance as they move up the leaderboard.
“I think the BOSS program is a great opportunity for Soldiers,” Vivas said. “It helps build morale, teamwork and connections between Soldiers outside the normal work environment.”
Vivas has participated in BOSS for approximately two years. He initially joined to meet Soldiers outside his normal duties, try different activities and connect with others who share his interests.
For Vivas, the program’s value extends beyond esports. He said BOSS provides Soldiers opportunities to decompress, develop relationships and interact with service members from different units and locations.
“I believe that programs like these positively impact the military community,” Vivas said. “There are many different activities and opportunities available, so there is something for almost everyone.”
Fort Buchanan Garrison Command Sgt. Maj. Everett B. Sikes recently recognized Vivas during a ceremony at the installation’s Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) office. MWR representatives also presented Vivas with three gifts in recognition of his performance in the competition.
“I was thankful that Pfc. Vivas was able to represent Fort Buchanan and Puerto Rico in general, nationwide when it came to something like this,” Sikes said. “Keep doing what you’re doing. Good luck, and hopefully you represent Fort Buchanan all the way to the end.”
With two weeks remaining in the competition, Vivas continues battling for a top-three position and an opportunity to take Puerto Rico’s presence in the Army-wide competition from the online leaderboard to the live finals in Texas.
Vivas’ drive and performance continue to showcase the talent within Puerto Rico’s military community and highlight Fort Buchanan’s enduring role as a key readiness enabler for the Army in the Caribbean.
