Coast Guard Rescues Dozens After Boat Capsizes Near Puerto Rico
Rescue teams continued searching the area after the boat sank near Mona Island, several miles offshore, as stated by reports citing the US Coast Guard.
Those aboard reportedly remained in the water for more than 12 hours before a passing vessel discovered them near the uninhabited island at approximately midday Monday and notified authorities.
Four survivors were initially pulled from the water, with subsequent Coast Guard operations raising the number of people rescued to at least 40.
According to the Coast Guard, the vessel overturned late Sunday following a violent altercation during which several individuals sustained serious machete injuries. The incident reportedly prompted passengers to abandon the boat and enter the water without life jackets.
Survivors informed authorities that approximately 60 people had been traveling aboard the vessel, indicating that several passengers remained missing as search and rescue operations continued.
The identities and nationalities of those aboard had not been established, a Coast Guard spokesperson said.
