Abbott Expands Operations in Arecibo with $3.2 Million Investment and Creation of More Than 60 Specialized Jobs
La Fortaleza, San Juan, Puerto Rico – August 27, 2026 – As part of the Government of Puerto Rico’s strategy to strengthen advanced manufacturing and promote the reshoring of strategic industries to the island, Governor Jenniffer González-Colón today announced, alongside Secretary of the Department of Economic Development and Commerce (DDEC), Carlos J. Ríos Pierluisi, and Abbott Arecibo Plant Director Edwin Quiles Delgado, the expansion of the company’s operations through a new medical device manufacturing project focused on cardiovascular technologies.
“Puerto Rico is experiencing a historic moment and continues to establish itself as the leading medical device and life sciences manufacturing hub under the jurisdiction of the United States. Abbott’s expansion demonstrates that the actions we have taken to strengthen manufacturing operations on the island are delivering concrete results. We will continue promoting a competitive business environment that attracts investment, strengthens U.S. supply chains, and creates well-paying jobs. Today, we celebrate an investment that not only strengthens Abbott but also demonstrates Puerto Rico’s leadership as a strategic partner for innovation and the production of cutting-edge medical technologies,” said Governor Jenniffer González-Colón.
According to the Governor, the expansion represents $3.206 million in new investment and the creation of more than 60 specialized jobs. The project also includes $1,037,175 in DDEC incentives to support investments in machinery and equipment, as well as job creation, strengthening Abbott’s Arecibo operations and the manufacturing lines for components of the Aveir™ Delivery System, which is essential to one of Abbott’s most innovative wireless pacemaker platforms.
For his part, Secretary Ríos Pierluisi emphasized that the investment strengthens Puerto Rico’s competitive position within Abbott’s global manufacturing network and further demonstrates the island’s capacity to develop high-value medical technologies.

Among the products manufactured and projects included in Abbott’s expansion in Arecibo are a range of medical devices used in cardiovascular procedures, including components associated with pacemaker systems and other technologies used in the treatment of heart disease that are distributed to international markets.
The Aveir™ Leadless Pacemaker Delivery System is a specialized system used to implant the Aveir™ leadless pacemaker, a new generation of pacemakers that eliminates the need for leads, helping reduce complications and enabling fewer invasive procedures.
